Austin police arrested and charged a man with murder Wednesday in the city’s first homicide of the year.

Police have accused JonCasey William Rowell, 29, of shooting David Loera Friday morning in the doorway of Loera’s North Austin home. Loera, 43, died at a local hospital.

Rowell, who is from Childress but was staying in a trailer park in Georgetown, remained in Travis County Jail on Wednesday with bail set at $250,000.

Homicide detectives connected Rowell to the shooting through a text message Loera sent him on the night of the shooting, an arrest affidavit said. Loera had sent him directions to his duplex home in the 300 block of East Powell Lane about an hour before the shooting, according to the document.

Two of Loera’s neighbors saw a man arrive at Loera’s home the night of the shooting in a black pickup. The man, who police identified as Rowell, went inside the home with Loera and later left, the neighbors told police.

However, Rowell returned a short time later and was seen patting his pockets before he began to knock loudly on the door, the affidavit said. The neighbors said they overheard an argument and then heard a “pop.” They then saw Rowell leave in the black pickup, according to the affidavit.

Loera’s roommate was inside the home when the shooting happened. He said he heard a knock at the door, which Loera answered. When Loera opened the door, the roommate heard what sounded like a firecracker.

Loera closed the door and ran into the home saying, “He shot me!” the roommate told police.

According to the affidavit, the roommate told police he believed Loera might have stolen something from Rowell, which led to the argument. Loera would sometimes steal items from clients when he worked as a prostitute, the roommate told police.

When police found Loera’s cellphone, they matched the number from the text message to an account that belonged to Rowell’s wife in Childress. The same cellphone number was written on an Austin Community College identification card issued to a “J. Rowell” and found in Loera’s bedroom, the affidavit said.
