106 charged with DWI over holiday weekend
Austin police say 106 people were arrested over Labor Day weekend as part of the department’s “no-refusal” initiative to stave off on drunken driving on local roads. That was up 12 percent from the same weekend last year, when police arrested 95 people on drunken driving charges over four nights.
The initiative allows police to obtain a search warrant to test the blood of people suspected of driving while intoxicated if they refuse to give a breath or blood sample.
From Monday night to Tuesday morning, there were 27 arrests, with 13 search warrants issued, police said. The night before, there were 28 arrests with 17 search warrants issued, police said. The busiest night of the initiative was Friday night when 51 were arrested, officials said.
The effort began 9 p.m. Friday and ended 5 a.m. Tuesday.
