In response to one group’s concerns regarding the fatal shooting by police of a man with a history of mental illness, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo on Friday praised his department’s interactions with suicidal people.
Acevedo also detailed the department’s response to the Tuesday night call and subsequent death of Herbert Babelay, 54, and said that police policies dealing with mentally ill individuals were being followed.
