Austin police said Thursday that an off-duty officer had no choice but to shoot a pit bull that was attacking a smaller dog in a North Austin pet store the previous night.
Police said that the shooting occurred about 7:20 p.m. Wednesday at a Petco store near Lakeline Boulevard and Research Boulevard, after a 16-year-old girl had entered the store with an approximately 90-pound pit bull on a leash. The pit bull encountered a Maltese, a small breed, on a leash. The two dogs began barking, and the owners pulled them apart, Assistant Chief Steve Deaton said.
