In the Austin area, like in other parts of the country, the average charge for care varies widely — even among hospitals with the same owners. The amounts hospitals ultimately are paid, however, tend to be similar across hospitals, regardless of ownership. And those payments are much less than the charges.
For example, the cost of treating heart failure and shock in a patient who has a complication or another disease causing health problems ranges from $18,033 at Seton Smithville Regional Hospital to $43,335 at Seton Medical Center Hays in Kyle, according to average charges compiled by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Seton Smithville was paid $5,492 for that treatment, while Seton Hays received $7,603 on average, according to the data.
