Abdul Razak Ali Artan: What we know now about the Ohio State attack suspect

Law enforcement officials have identified an Ohio State University student as the person who drove a car into a crowd of students on campus, then got out of the vehicle and started stabbing people with a butcher knife Monday.

>>Attack at Ohio State: Latest updates

The attack ended quickly when a police officer confronted the suspect, identified by The Associated Press, Fox News and NBC News as Abdul Razak Ali Artan. The officer ordered Artan to drop the knife, then shot and killed him when he failed to comply, officials said.

Nine people were taken to area hospitals for treatment after the attack. One is listed in critical condition.

What we know now about Abdul Artan:

• Abdul Razak Ali Artan, was a refugee who left Somalia for Pakistan with his family in 2007, then came to the United States in 2014 as a legal permanent resident of the United States.

• Artan was shot dead by police officer Alan Horujko within one minute of a 911 call being placed from the campus.

• Artan injured at least nine people before he was confronted by the police officer.

• Artan did not use a gun during the attack, according to authorities. Law enforcement officials say the gunfire heard by some witnesses was from the police officer’s weapon. When the call went out from authorities, the reference was to an “active shooter situation.”

• So far, police have not said if they know what Artan’s motive was.

• According to some witnesses, a fire alarm was pulled at Watts Hall on Ohio State’s campus prior to Artan running his car into a group of students evacuating the building. Watts Hall is the location of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

• A witness told CNN that Artan was “completely silent” during the attack.
