UPDATE: Richard Overton, oldest vet and Austin resident, diagnosed with pneumonia, family says

Austin resident Richard Overton, the oldest living veteran in America who recently celebrated his 111th birthday, has been diagnosed with pneumonia in his right lung, according to a relative.

He was hospitalized today due a fever of 102 degrees, his cousin Volma Overton Jr. said. Overton has dealt with pneumonia in the past, he said.

Overton is with family at St. David’s Medical Center’s emergency room in Central Austin, Volma Overton Jr. said.

Volma Overton Jr. said family members called an ambulance to take Richard Overton to the hospital this afternoon, when he suddenly took ill.

“He seems to be a little better, but he still has a fever,” Volma Overton said. He will likely stay in the hospital overnight for observation, he said.
