UPDATE: Austin Water crews fix broken main that shot water into air

4 p.m. update: Austin Water officials said via Twitter that work on a broken 6-inch main on Barton Parkway in South Austin “has been completed, service restored and the roadway has been repaired and is now open to traffic.”

The broken main had shot water two stories into the air, causing traffic disruptions in the Barton Hills neighborhood.

Earlier: Austin police say a large amount of water is shooting from the ground and they are asking drivers to avoid the area around Barton Parkway and Homedale Drive in the Barton Hills neighborhood of South Austin.

According to the Austin Fire Department, a large water pipe burst in the middle of the street and is shooting water about 20 feet in the air. The city’s water utility crews are responding, however authorities have asked people to avoid the area in the 2300 block of Barton Parkway near Barton Hills Elementary School.

Drivers are asked to take alternate routes because lanes in both directions are blocked at Homedale Drive.
