Icing from Austin’s deep freeze Wednesday morning forced police to close a stretch of the Interstate 35 service road just south of the Ben White Boulevard interchange.
But police said the shutdown was not from freezing rain: A nearby business sprinkler system appears to have provided the water for ice to form on the roadway.
Austin police had announced the closure of the service road for southbound I-35 at Shelby Lane shortly before 7 a.m.
The closure comes after icing caused dozens of wrecks during the Tuesday evening commute, which left one man dead and snarled traffic across the city.
