5 things to know about Dell Seton Medical Center at UT’s open house

The region’s newest hospital, Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas, will open May 21. But first, it will host an open house for the public 1-5 p.m. Saturday. Here are five things to know about the hospital:

1. Privately owned, on public land: Dell Seton Medical Center, owned and operated by the Seton Healthcare Family, is at the northwest corner of 15th and Red River streets on the UT Dell Medical School campus. The university leases the property to Central Health, Travis County’s health care district, which subleases it to Seton.

2. End of an era: Dell Seton replaces University Medical Center Brackenridge across the street, ending 133 years of public ownership of Brackenridge, which has operated under various names since 1884.

3. By the numbers: The hospital is a Level 1 trauma center for the region with 42 trauma beds, 13 operating rooms, 211 patient rooms (with capacity to add up to 135), 517,000 square feet and a $310 million price tag for design and construction.

4. Primary teaching hospital for UT: Dell Seton will be an important training ground for students and residents — doctors undergoing additional training — at UT’s Dell Medical School.

5. A symbiotic relationship: UT, Central Health and Seton are tied together through a series of affiliation agreements with an overarching goal of keeping people out of hospitals by focusing on wellness.
