Sick of cold weather? Count down the days to some summer milestones

That was me, shuffling the boys off to school in the 20-degree pre-dawn, contemplating things best left to eskimos and penguins.

I dearly love West Texas and I served a couple years in Southeast Texas, but I’m a Central Texan, I guess. Lived here for the great majority of my life. And it is not supposed to be this cold this long.

If you’re with me on this — and we’d feel bad about the folks north of Dallas laughing at us, except they are all moving here as fast as they can — you are probably thinking of warmer days, too. Let’s look ahead to hot afternoons and warm nights …

85 DAYS

The world champion Houston Astros open the 2018 baseball season by visiting the Texas Rangers on March 29. Technically, the end of March is not out of range of a random cold snap, but the boys of summer wouldn’t let that happen, right?

107 DAYS

Willie Nelson and Robert Earl Keen open the season at New Braunfels’ Whitewater music amphitheater on April 20 (4/20 … coincidence?). I know from experience that pre-Memorial Day tubing can be a chilly, butt-numbing float, but the music should be hot.

115 DAYS

The 55th annual Eeyore’s Birthday Party will be held April 28 at Pease Park. Ah, body paint, gentle spring breezes, drum circles and interesting costumes.

122 DAYS

Though parts of the park will be open on various days through the spring, all of Schlitterbahn will be open to visitors for the first time this year on May 5.

155 DAYS

If your idea of summer runs a little bit more hard-core than Eeyore and Schlitterbahn, the Republic of Texas biker rally roars into town on June 7.

189 DAYS

The average first 100-degree day in Austin is on July 11. Think about today before you start whining about the heat.

241 DAYS

Do we really have to wait for the National Championship game to be over before we talk about next season? The Longhorns and the Aggies both open their season on September 1.
