RECALL: Some stew meat at H-E-B may be contaminated with plastic, metal, feds say

Swift Beef Co. is recalling about 4,700 pounds of beef stew that may be contaminated with plastic and metal and that was sold at H-E-B earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Tuesday.

The following boneless beef stew items were produced on Dec. 13 and are subject to recall: 

• Cases of six 5-pound bags containing fresh beef stew meat intended for H-E-B grocery store retailer repackage. The affected case code is 69404. 

• Repackaged beef stew meat trays that also contain separately wrapped vegetables. The meat trays are marked with the number 7231 on the side of the tray. 

• Repackaged beef stew labeled as H-E-B brand: Beef Stew Meat Tenderized RP, Beef Stew Meat RP, Beef Stew Meat VP, Beef Stew Meat-CR VP, Beef Stew Meat Tenderized VP, Beef Stew Meat CP and Beef Stew Kit. 

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 3D” next to the USDA mark of inspection or Est. 7231 on the side of the tray, federal officials said. 

San Antonio H-E-B officials discovered the problem on Sunday when they opened packages containing the beef stew, federal officials said. That same day, H-E-B locked the sales of all stew meat from their registers and pulled all products from shelves in all the stores, federal officials said.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, federal officials said.
