A lawsuit filed against a Round Rock woman by her date for texting during a movie has won a place on a list of the top 10 “Most Ridiculous” suits of 2017.

Austin resident Brandon Vezmar sued the woman in small claims court in Travis County in May for texting during a showing of “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.” The lawsuit was No. 8 in the list released Thursday by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Legal Reform.

Vezmar said the woman had texted 10 to 20 times during the movie on their first date and demanded she pay him for $17.31 for the ticket. The woman defended herself in an interview, saying she had only texted a few times but ended up apologizing to Vezmar and paying him for the ticket.

The news release issued by the institute said of the lawsuit, “Is clogging up the courts with ridiculous suits like these a way to get revenge for a bad first date?”
