Large grass fire spreads through Hays County

Multiple fire departments responded to a large grass fire Monday afternoon that burned about 150 acres east of Kyle in the area of Mathias Lane and Peaceful Valley Road.

Three sheds and three cars were destroyed, but no one was reported injured and no one was displaced from his or her home, according to the Kyle Fire Department.

The fire, which was first reported about 1:30 p.m., raged near several residences, and people in the area were asked to evacuate temporarily.

Investigators suspect that an unattended garbage fire caused the blaze, and high winds fanned the flames, the Hays County fire marshal said. The person responsible has been identified, and the fire marshal said charges were pending.

After a few hours, the grass fire was fully contained. Firefighters requested a helicopter water drop but ultimately did not need it, Kyle fire officials said.

By 4 p.m., Hays County officials had begun reopening roads, allowing residents to return to their homes. Hays County school district buses also resumed their routes around that time.
