6-acre fire threatening 20 homes in far eastern Travis Co. contained, officials say

Firefighters quickly moved to contain a six-acre blaze in far eastern Travis County that potentially threatened 20 homes Thursday.

The fire broke out shortly before 12:30 p.m. and raced across an open field of dry, dead grass near the intersection of Ross Road and Pearce Lane, Austin Fire Department Division Chief Thayer Smith said.

Within an hour, Austin firefighters and crews from Emergency Services District #11 contained the blaze, which burned about a half-mile from Del Valle High School.

Fire officials say they think improperly discarded cigarette butts may have contributed to the origin of the fire.
