FORECAST: Drizzle, morning fog making roads slick; heavier rain at night

Wednesday forecast for Austin: Morning commuters should watch out for slick roads as patchy fog and drizzle blanket Central Texas, forecasters say.

Heavier showers are likely later in the day in Austin with rain chances as high as 70 percent, according to the National Weather Service. Forecasters anticipate total rainfall measuring up to only a few tenths of an inch.

Drivers running into fog should slow down and use low-beam headlights, the weather service says.

Wednesday’s outlook calls for overcast skies and a high of 43 degrees. The chill will likely be made worse by north winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts as strong high as 20 mph.

Temperatures were in the upper 30s across the Austin metro area as of 6 a.m.:

  • 37 degrees at Camp Mabry in West Austin
  • 36 degrees in Bastrop
  • 35 degrees in Dripping Springs
  • 35 degrees in Marble Falls
  • 34 degrees in Johnson City
  • 33 degrees in Florence

Conditions in the Hill Country were expected to be more intense: The weather service says a slight chance of freezing rain across portions of northern Kerr, Gillespie, Llano, Burnet, and western Williamson counties between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. was possible.

If freezing rain does occur, forecasters say it would be light, patchy and limited to elevated areas, including bridges.

Back in Austin, forecasters expect mostly cloudy skies at night before becoming mostly clear with temperatures dropping as low as 34.

By Thursday, Central Texas should see mostly sunny skies, with temperatures in Austin rebounding to a high near 58 degrees. But clouds return Thursday night as temperatures sink to 44.

The overcast skies, though, will linger throughout the weekend as a cold front arrives Saturday night, according to the weather service’s extended outlook:

Friday: A 20 percent chance of showers after 7 a.m. with a high near 65 as warmer south winds prevail. A 30 percent chance of showers at night, mainly after 7 p.m. with a low around 53.

Saturday: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 7 a.m. with a high near 70. A 20 percent chance of showers at night with a low around 43. A cold front replaces warm south winds with breezes from the west-northwest after midnight.

Sunday: A 20 percent chance of showers with a high near 51. A 20 percent chance of showers also at night with a low around 36.

Monday: A 20 percent chance of showers with a high near 54. Still a 20 percent chance of showers at night with a low around 42.
