FORECAST: Cloudy Thursday with temps in 40s; some sunshine may return Friday

Thursday forecast for Austin: The sun will stay mostly hidden behind clouds on Thursday, as temperatures are expected to remain unseasonably cold in the 40s, before gradually warming up to the low 50s on Friday and the mid-60s on Saturday.

However, a cold front expected to arrive late Saturday will bring a new mass of bitterly cold air and a chance for rain in the area by Sunday night, in time for New Year’s Eve celebrations, the National Weather Service says.

Rain chances will build to 30 percent during the day Sunday and slowly taper off at night, when low temperatures are expected to dive into the 20s overnight, potentially turning the showers into freezing rain in the first hours of 2018.

The rain chances disappear by Monday, leaving Austin with clear skies and freezing temperatures mainly in the low 30s. Things will finally begin to warm up as the new week wears on, but overnight temperatures are expected to sink to below freezing through at least Tuesday night.

Here are highlights from the weather service’s extended forecast:

Thursday: Mostly cloudy with a high temperature near 47 and a low around 37.

Friday: Partly sunny with a high near 52 and a low around 46.

Saturday: Mostly sunny with a high near 66 and a low around 45

New Year’s Eve: Cloudy and windy with a 30 percent chance of daytime rain and a high near 50. A slight chance of rain and then freezing rain overnight. Lows will drop to around 25.

New Year's Day: Mostly sunny and windy with a high near 35 and a low around 23.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny with a high near 41 and a low around 28.
