Police: Man wanting free phone made threats

A man is accused of threatening to shoot employees at two Austin stores after demanding a free phone and not receiving it, according to an arrest affidavit.

Chafik Bourenane, 34, was charged with making a terroristic threat, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Austin police first received a call on Dec. 21 about noon from the Boost Mobile at 2015 E. Riverside Dr. regarding a disturbance between staff and a man later identified as Bourenane, the affidavit said.

The caller said Bourenane came into the store, asked for a free phone and, once denied, said the employee would “get shot or hurt,” the affidavit said.

As police were responding, a second call came in from the MetroPCS at a nearby shopping center located at 1901 E. Riverside Dr., according to the affidavit. An employee reported that Bourenane had threatened to kill her, the affidavit said.

Police located Bourenane walking in the direction the witness described and detained him, the affidavit said. It said police took Bourenane to the MetroPCS, and the victim confirmed that it was him who had asked her for a free phone.

The victim said she then began to tell Bourenane about the company’s free phone trade-in plans, the affidavit said. It said Bourenane again told the victim he wanted the phone for free, and the victim told him that the company doesn’t provide free phones.

The victim told police Bourenane then said, “I’m going to go outside, grab my gun and shoot you. I’ve piled up bodies before,” according to the affidavit. The victim then called 911, the affidavit said.

Bourenane had 10 active Downtown Austin Community Court warrants, according to the affidavit. One was for aggressive solicitation.
