Austin health officials seek Russians who rescued possibly rabid bat last week

If you’re Russian, and you’re visiting Austin, and you rescued a bat last week while kayaking on Lady Bird Lake, you should call the city’s Health Department: The bat may have had rabies.

The staff at the Waller Creek Boathouse told city officials that the four people, who may have been Russian, reported scooping a bat into a kayak on Friday.

Health officials have been unable to find the bat and they are worried the rescuers may have been infected by rabies, Health Department spokeswoman Carole Barasch said.

The Health Department is encouraging anyone with knowledge of the bat rescue to call 512-972-5555.
