Austin district students will attend school one less day than the current year under the 2018-19 academic calendar.

The school board Monday night approved the 2018-19 school calendar, which starts students back in class Aug. 20. Summer will come slightly earlier, however, as students will be released from school May 24, 2019, the Friday prior to Memorial Day.

More than 25,000 parents and employees — an increase of 20 percent with 4,935 more votes — gave feedback on the calendar options, and the majority preferred Calendar A over two other options that would have started and ended the school year later.

Students will attend school 176 days and still must meet state required 75,600 instructional minutes. By increasing the overall minutes of school throughout the year, students will attend one less day. Broken down by campus levels, high school students will spend the most time on campus with 79,200 minutes, middle school students will attend 76,035 minutes and elementary students will have 76,032 minutes.

Other highlights include:

• High school final exams will be given prior to winter break.

• Students will get an entire week off for Thanksgiving, with student holidays running Nov. 19-23.

• Winter break will start on Friday, Dec. 21 and run through Jan. 1, 2019.

• Spring break remains a full week, from March 18 through March 22, 2019.

• Bad weather make up days, if needed, are scheduled for Feb. 18 and April 19, 2019.

• Teachers have 187 duty days, including 11 work days without students with eight professional development days, starting Aug. 13.
