Play-Doh lids, bottle caps and Mardi Gras beads fill some of the boxes piled up inside Rebecca Stuch’s North Austin home. Eventually these reusable treasures that temporarily crowd her living room, office and storage space will end up in the hands of artists or crafters ready to transform them into artwork.
In 2011, Stuch founded Austin Creative Reuse, a nonprofit organization that collects, sells and distributes reusable materials. Getting the items — from used greeting cards to old keys — isn’t difficult. With donations, “we can fill a warehouse in two days,” Stuch says. The challenge comes with teaching people how to reuse and encouraging them to try it at home. Austin Creative Reuse diverts waste from landfills but also wants to build community along the way.
