Shop and help Mother Earth this month
Earth Day celebrations will commence worldwide on April 22. Each spring communities across the globe acknowledge our planet and take action to support and protect it. In Austin, several retailers are getting involved with Earth Day fundraisers.
More than 200 businesses, including many fashion and style stores such as Kendra Scott, Stag and Moss among others, are participating in the Give Five Percent to Mother Earth campaign. Participating retailers have committed to donating 5 percent of their sales on Earth Day to seven Central Texas non-profit organizations who work on regional environmental issues. For the complete list of retailers and beneficiaries, visit austingive5.com.
At Hiatus Spa + Retreat, there are several ways customers can be a part of Earth Day. Customers can purchase raffle tickets for spa services, and sale proceeds benefit the Gulf Restoration Network and Lower Mississippi River Keeper. Tickets are $5-$25, for the May 1 drawing. Also available for purchase at Hiatus is a nature-inspired print by Austin artist Jan Heaton. Price for an unframed print is $125 and $295 for a framed print. Sale proceeds also benefit the same organizations.
And for those who want to celebrate Earth Day by looking stylish in upcycled accessories, check out the bags from First World Trash, a Queens, New York-based company. The handmade collection features everything from messenger bags to beach totes that have been salvaged from items such as seat belts, bike inner tubes and billboards.
All materials are cleaned, cut and polished. No two products are exactly alike, and prices range from $24-$160. First World Trash products are available online at firstworldtrash.com.
