François Bovon, professor emeritus at Harvard Divinity School, has described a certain encounter in the early pages of the Gospel of Luke as revealing “the incipient tension between God’s plan and the will of the people.”
The encounter occurs between Jesus and the synagogue assembly in his hometown of Nazareth when he tells those gathered a pair of stories from the scriptures they share. The response is an angry eruption in which Jesus is driven out of the synagogue and nearly shoved off a cliff.
