Mychal S. Mitchell had just graduated from architecture school in Arizona when she embarked on a European backpacking adventure — trusty journal in tow. It was her first time out of the country. Mitchell sketched the majestic historic buildings from Spain to Ireland, detailing the arresting architecture and documenting the trek of a lifetime. But at a Rome train station, just as she was about to pay for a soda, a small boy whisked by, snatched the small backpack at her feet and dashed with her passport, Walkman and, most importantly, her journal.
“I was devastated,” Mitchell says. That was about two decades ago, but had that journal not been stolen, who knows what course Mitchell’s life would have taken?
