When it comes to finding talent, Nailah Akinyémi-Sankofa has been known to dash across a room if she spots someone with modeling potential. At a bus stop, she once followed a gut feeling to approach a stranger who turned out to be a talented young hairstylist who has now joined her fashion production company.
Akinyémi-Sankofa always has her eyes peeled for people who can shine with Runway Underground, the fashion production company she founded in 2008 as a response to the lack of African-Americans in Austin’s fashion scene. Runway Underground produces fashion events and works with models, designers, makeup artists, hairstylists and photographers to promote diversity in everything from editorials to the runway.
