When the Fun Fun Fun Fest lineup was released last week, underneath MGMT, Snoop Dogg, Slayer and other well-known acts was one that most people probably did not know: Brooklyn-based Unlocking the Truth. The trio, which started as a duo back in 2007, of Malcolm Brickhouse (electric guitar), Jarad Dawkins (drums) and Alec Atkins (bassist) played their first gigs outside subway stations in New York. And they’re in the sixth grade (now, not when they formed seven years ago. They met when they were 4.).
Fun Fun Fun Fest organizer/Transmission co-owner James Moody heard about the band a while back via some early write-ups and YouTube videos and reached out to the mother of one of the members, who referred to herself as their “mom-ager.” Since that time, a short documentary on the band — in which they explain how their love for metal doesn’t really go over with their classmates and share a fantasy list of venues they hope to play — has earned them some high-profile press, though Fun Fun Fun Fest is their biggest gig yet.
