Celebrities will be out in full force in Austin this month, as a record number of 33 red-carpets events will be held at various venues around town when the South by Southwest Film Festival kicks off March 8.
Three red-carpet events will be staged on the first day, with Steve Carell, Jim Carrey and Olivia Wilde in town for the premiere of the Las Vegas-set comedy “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.” Also in town on March 8 are Josh Duhamel and Dan Fogler, stars of “Scene Route,” as well as Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas and Elizabeth Blackmore for the “Evil Dead.”
Other highlights include a red carpet for Houston Rockets basketball star Jeremy Lin, who’s the focus of a new documentary, “Linsanity”; Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch, who’ll attend the local premiere of the Sundance hit “Prince Avalanche,” directed by Austin’s David Gordon Green; and Willie Nelson, Harry Connick Jr., Kris Kirstofferson, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Chandler Canterbury, Eloise DeJoria and Turk Pipkin, who’ll attend the premiere of “When Angels Sing.”
In a bit of synergy with SXSW Interactive, Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning, co-founders of Napster, will walk the red carpet for the screening of the new documentary “Downloaded.” And Tony Danza and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will attend the screening of “Don Jon’s Addiction.”
With the temporary closing of the Alamo South, the festival is moving some of its red-carpet events to the Topfer Theatre at the new Zach. But that’s not the reason for the leap in this year’s celebrity quotient. “I’d say it’s much more about the films that happen to be in the program this year, and the talent who are planning to attend with them,” says Rebecca Feferman, head of media relations and a SXSW programmer. “But we are thrilled to have the Topfer as a new venue, which will have 420 seats and more physical space to accommodate some larger red carpets than we’ve been able to have in the past (outside of the events at the Paramount).”
The festival continues through March 16, with two red carpets on the last day: Dennis Quaid and director Ramin Fahrani will attend the screening of “At Any Price,” and Ellen Page, Alexander Skarsgård, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij will attend a screening of “The East.”
“A big part of why films want to premiere at SXSW and talent are always excited to attend is because of our incredible Austin audiences, who always come out to support enthusiastically and with a real openness and passion for movies of all kinds,” Feferman says. “We’re incredibly excited about all the great people who will be in town for SXSW this year and hope we can pack every house with the best movie fans Austin has to offer.”
