If you’ve traversed Barton Springs Road in the past few months you’ve seen Umami Mia Pizzeria. Even if you don’t remember the name of the restaurant, you likely recall the garish exterior design, the large signage resembling the Rolling Stones’ classic logo and the east-facing wall covered in portraits of people’s faces, tongues out.
A wise writer once told me, when writing about food, don’t talk about how your tongue reacts to dishes. Readers don’t want to imagine the inside of your mouth. That advice holds true for restaurants, as well. Don’t show me people’s tongues; it’s not appetizing. But the graphic choice does leave an impression, something that couldn’t be said for Romeo’s, the red-sauce Italian joint that previously occupied the building that now houses Umami Mia.
