The Associated Press reported that numerous media outlets reported, citing anonymous sources, that Pitt got in a confrontation with one of the children, but the FBI says that is not the case.

The AP reported that the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Families would not confirm or deny any investigation, but Sgt. Barry Montgomery with the LAPD told The Hollywood Reporter there is no criminal investigation being pursued.

To my knowledge, [Pitt talking to police] never happened. And right now, that is where our office is," Montgomery said. We are not investigating any case, nor do we have any allegations against Mr. Pitt. We understand how rumors get spun up, and hopefully we can put a few of them to rest. We have no investigation involving Mr. Pitt."

The FBI also released a statement to THR refuting the reports:

In response to your inquiry regarding allegations within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States; specifically, an aircraft carrying Mr. Brad Pitt and his children, the FBI is continuing to gather facts and will evaluate whether an investigation at the federal level will be pursued.

The alleged confrontation happened a day before Jolie and Pitt separated, according to a date provided by Jolie in a divorce filing on Monday. Jolie cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the couple's split.

They have six children together.

Jolie, 41, filed for divorce from Pitt, 52, Monday and requested sole physical custody of the couple's children. They were married in 2014.

"I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids," Pitt said in a statement released on Monday to PEOPLE. "I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

In a statement made by her attorney, Jolie said the decision to divorce Pitt "was made for the health of the family."
