Jewell Parker Rhodes first charmed young readers with her New Orleans-set “Ninth Ward,” which ultimately collected the Coretta Scott King Author Honor. Rhodes sets her newest novel in the sugar-cane fields of River Road Plantation along the Mississippi, introducing us to “Sugar” (Little Brown, $16.99), a 10-year-old whose life is about to change. Slavery has just been abolished, but Sugar’s family is still spending hours in the fields. When a group of Chinese workers comes to the plantation to help harvest, Sugar becomes the unlikely bridge between two worlds. (Ages 10 and up)
