In some ways, South by Southwest invented modern Austin. Or at least SXSW popularized what we were to become.
It brought people downtown in great numbers all at once. It opened up the near-town neighborhoods. It created the impression that our sidewalks are regularly populated with smart, open, kind, fun, fit creative types.
