Police arrest suspect in Thanksgiving Day shooting that injured two

UPDATE, 11/30, 9 a.m.: Austin police have arrested the man suspected of shooting two people in North Austin on Thanksgiving Day, authorities said Thursday morning.

Authorities booked Hector Guajardo-Garcia into the Travis County Jail on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon late Wednesday, records show.

His bail has been set at $140,000 bail.

ORIGINAL POST, 11/29, 3:30 p.m.: Austin police are looking for Hector Mario Guajardo-Garcia, 32, who they believe is responsible for shooting two men in North Austin last week, according to an arrest warrant filed Tuesday.

On Nov. 23, police responded to a call at the 9600 block of North Lamar Blvd. and found two people had been shot. The first victim was shot in his left arm and was taken to North Austin Hospital, while the second victim was shot multiple times in his stomach and was taken to Round Rock Hospital for emergency surgery, the affidavit says.

Police spoke to several witnesses who knew the victims. They said the group was at a parking lot in the area when a blue SUV arrived. The two victims walked up the vehicle and, shortly after, the witnesses heard gunshots fired, the affidavit says. The two victims came back to the group and told the witnesses they had been shot, according to the affidavit.

One witness told police that he walked up to the SUV with the two victims, but “as they walked up, the driver in the blue SUV had started shooting,” the affidavit says.

Police went to Round Rock Hospital the next day and spoke to a friend of the second victim, according to the document. The friend told police that the victim told him about a fight he had with a man they have known for over five years known as “Mario,” the document says. Police gave the friend a description of the shooting suspect, and even though he did not witness the shooting, the friend told police it matched the description of “Mario,” the affidavit says.

Police searched through their database and found an arrest photo of Guajardo-Garcia that matched the description of the suspect, according to the affidavit.

Police then spoke with another witness who said that the second victim had told her that he robbed Guajardo-Garcia “during a narcotics transaction a few days prior” to the shooting, the affidavit says.

The first victim also identified Guajardo-Garcia as the suspect through a photo lineup done by police on Nov. 28, according to the affidavit. Police were not able to speak with the second victim because he is still in the hospital on life support, the document says.

Guajardo-Garcia is being charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was not in custody as of Wednesday afternoon.
