Man gets 55 years for 2016 murder in East Austin

A Travis County jury sentenced Damon Fowler to 55 years in prison on Thursday, a day after they convicted him of murder in the 2016 shooting of Kennie Crockett.

After the judge read the sentence, Crockett’s father, Marcus, came to the witness stand and described his son as a churchgoer who just days before his death performed landscaping at the family’s cemetery.

“Never knew we may have been preparing his final resting place,” Crockett said.

Fowler, 38, must also pay a $1,000 fine.

The jury spent about 90 minutes on Wednesday before returning the verdict. Prosecutors argued that Fowler shot Crockett, 24, over a dispute about a car.

Fowler’s brother, Donald Perkins, testified in trial that Fowler was the trigger man. Investigators originally charged Perkins with murder, but prosecutors dropped the charge in exchange for his testimony.
