Crash closes U.S. 290 at the ‘Y’

Multiple westbound lanes were closed Tuesday morning after a crash on U.S. 290 West at Texas 71, also known as the “Y” in Oak Hill.

Texas Department of Transportation officials were warning drivers of the incident in Southwest Austin after confirming it around 9:30 a.m.

TxDOT’s online traffic map indicated that as many as three lanes were blocked by dirt and rocks after a truck tipped over.

Police: Man robbed convenience store twice

Austin police are searching for a man who held up a convenience store in Southeast Austin twice in late December.

The man is thought to be between 35 and 40 years old, about 5-foot-6 and 200 pounds. He had black hair, a goatee and possibly a tattoo on the right side of his neck.

Police said he first robbed a Valero in the 2200 block of East Oltorf Street on Dec. 19 around 12:38 a.m., then returned around 1:26 a.m. on Dec. 28.

Police said the man threatened a store employee during both incidents, but only made off with cash in one attempt.

The man may live in the area where the robberies happened, police said.

AUSTIN

More than 200 suspected drunken drivers arrested

Austin police arrested more than 200 people on charges of driving while intoxicated during a no-refusal initiative covering both Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

According to police, a total 210 people were arrested from Dec. 15 through Jan. 2.

Authorities obtained 95 blood search warrants, 71 consent breath samples and 44 consent blood samples during the roughly two-week window.

Nearly 50 people who were arrested face Class A misdemeanor charges for having a previous conviction or a breath sample of 0.15 or higher, and 26 face felony charges, including three who were driving with a child passenger.

The legal limit in Texas for blood alcohol content is 0.08.

EAST AUSTIN

No injuries reported in house fire

Austin firefighters quickly knocked down a blaze at a house in far East Austin early Tuesday and no one was injured, authorities said.

Crews responded to the fire on the 4000 block of Reeders Drive, in a subdivision in Hornsby Bend east of Texas 130, shortly after 6 a.m.

Initials reports said the fire was in a bedroom on the first-floor of the two-story home.

Less than fifteen minutes later, the Austin Fire Department said the blaze was put out.

Fire officials said no one was home at the time.
