Austin attorney Jamie Balagia — the ‘DWI Dude’ — charged in federal court

Austin attorney Jamie Balagia, who markets himself as the “DWI Dude” and the “420 Dude” for his defense of people charged with drunken driving and marijuana possession has been charged by the FBI with conspiracy to commit money laundering and obstruction of justice, federal court records show.

Balagia, who ran for Texas Attorney General in 2014, was part of an alleged plot to scam $1.2 million from Colombian clients in exchange for promises to bribe judges and prosecutors, according to a report by the San Antonio Express-News.

Another man, Charles Norman Morgan, is a co-defendant in the case.

Records in the U.S. Eastern District Court show Balagia was arrested on March 9 and that he is scheduled to appear on Friday in Sherman.
