Doc’s Motorworks closing on South Congress

Owners looking for new location in the area

Last day is Dec. 23

After an 11-year run, Doc’s Motorworks is closing its location on South Congress Avenue in Austin effective Dec. 23, the bar and grill’s owner said Monday.

The news comes as the new owners of the property plan a mixed-use project on the land that currently houses Doc’s and several other businesses.

Doc’s Motorworks opened in 2005 at 1123 South Congress as the first Doc’s bar and grill. The other Austin-area locations are on West 38th Street and Medical Parkway and on Brodie Lane in Sunset Valley. Doc’s also has Houston location at Westheimer & Graustark.

“The property was sold to a developer and although Doc’s has several more years on their lease, the owners of Doc’s determined that due to the disruption in business with surrounding construction it would be in their best interest to negotiate a buyout of the current lease,” Doc’s owners said in a written statement. “An agreement was reached recently which both parties feel is reasonable under the circumstances. Doc’s is actively looking to replace that location.”

Co-owner Charles Milligan, Doc’s chief operations officer, said Doc’s is looking for another spot in the area.

“We have so many regular quests at our SoCo location and we know they will be just as disappointed as we are,” Milligan said.

Doc’s is known for its Texas beer selection, cheese fries and full menu of Texas-style platters, appetizers, salads, burgers and tacos. The South Congress location has been a hub for watching Texas sports and was frequented by locals and celebrities alike.

A mixed-use project planned for the commercial strip that includes Doc’s would displace the pub, along with Sfanthor House of Wax, Texas National Outfitters, Wet Salon & Studio, Strut, Parts & Labour, United Apparel Liquidators and a gym. The project calls for office, retail and restaurant uses as well as a parking garage.

Lake|Flato is designing that project, along with a boutique hotel behind the property called Hotel Magdalena that Liz Lambert is planning.

Local developer Clark Lyda is involved in both planned projects. Turnbridge Equities LLC, a privately held real estate investment and development firm, is also involved in the mixed-use project.
