AngelHack bringing startup competition to Austin

AngelHack — a weekend competition where teams work together to create new products — is coming to Austin.

Started in San Francisco in 2011, the event brings together developers and entrepreneurs, who have 36 hours to come up with an idea, develop it and pitch the results to mentors and investors.

The Austin event, which is part of a tour of more than 30 cities worldwide, will take place on June 1 at the downtown headquarters of software startup Mass Relevance.

“Anyone can participate, whether you have an idea or not and whether you have a team or not,” said Greg Gopman, AngelHack co-founder and CEO. “We go through the night, bond, build, and drink a lot of Red Bull. Come Sunday afternoon we get to see what everyone developed.”

Teams will be competing to win a trip to fall trip to Silicon Valley, where they will receive mentoring and present their startup to Google Ventures and other investors. Previous winners have gone on to attend accelerator programs including Y-Combinator, AngelPad, TechStars and 500 Startups.

About 150 people are expected to take part in the Austin event, which starts Saturday morning with breakfast and idea pitches. Teams form after that and work starts in the afternoon. Teams will pitch their ideas on Sunday to a group of tech veterans who will pick the winner.

“We’re excited they’re coming here because it’s a chance to meet tons of dynamic and creative people and build on exciting new ideas in an inspiring place,” said software developer Damon Clinkscales, who is organizing the event. “I hope it brings the Austin tech community together and produces some quality ideas. While there is only one AngelHack winner, many of the projects will continue on beyond the hackathon.”
