Count music legend Sting among the celebrities heading to town for this year’s Formula 1 festivities.
The world-famous singer has been booked Nov. 16 at Austin City Limits Live, the venue announced Monday. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, with prices starting at $250.
Sting is just the latest in a long line of big-name acts to stop by the cozy concert venue, which opened its doors about two years ago at the base of the $300 million W Austin Hotel and Residences at 310 W. Second St. in downtown Austin.
ACL Live is also home base for PBS’ “Austin City Limits” program, which airs on TV stations nationwide.
Stratus Properties, the building’s developer, teamed up with Circuit of the Americas to bring Sting to Austin during this year’s F1 weekend, according to Circuit President and CEO Steve Sexton.
“We think the chance to hear him sing in one of Austin’s iconic concert venues will be popular with Formula 1 fans in town for race weekend,” Sexton said.
Beau Armstrong, CEO and Chairman of Stratus Properties, says the venue’s acoustics and intimate atmosphere – it has about 1,500 fixed seats, as well as some general admission spots near the stage – have made it easy to draw performers such as Sting who typically play venues 10 or even 20 times larger.
Upcoming events include a sold-out Elton John show on Oct. 17.
“The project is firing on all cylinders,” Armstrong said. “It has met or exceeded all our expectations.
“We’re able to attract the very best talent — these guys can play anywhere they want – because of the caliber of experience we can offer the acts and fans.”
The sound system, already considered one of the city’s best, was recently upgraded, Armstrong said.
“We thought there was a better sound system out there, so we went for it,” he said. “The room sounds so good.”
Combined, the “Austin City Limits” TV show and the performances by Sting, Elton John and others have brought the city of Austin immeasurable worldwide publicity, said Bob Lander, president and CEO of the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“‘Austin City Limits,’ the TV show, has brought amazing talent to Austin for almost four decades,” Lander said. “The addition of the state-of-the-art ACL Live venue has raised our music scene to a whole other level. Not only has it changed the landscape of the music scene in Austin, but it has also added an incredibly versatile venue to our conventions and meetings mix.
“In the fall of 2012, we partnered with ACL to put on a hugely successful event for the Professional Convention Management Association — so successful, in fact, that we believe this event greatly impacted our ability to secure hosting their convention here in 2017.”
