Tasty dried apricots

Highlights

Fresh apricots may be out of season, but you can still find tasty alternatives in dried form. We recently tried the sun-dried apricots from Traina Foods in Patterson, California.

The sweet-tart, tangy, deeply flavored apricot halves come in two- or five-pound bags; eat the plump bites as a snack or use them in sweet or savory recipes. (The apricots pictured below are preserved with sulfur dioxide, which helps maintain their color and stop microbial growth, but the company also sells organic dried apricots with no additives or preservatives.)

Other dried fruits available include sun-dried nectarines, peaches, pears, plums and tomatoes.

Humble magic in Georgian capital’s restaurant renaissance
Humble magic in Georgian capital’s restaurant renaissance

When the chef Meriko Gubeladze opened Shavi Lomi, she recalled that Tbilisi was “starving for small, homey restaurants with good food.” That was 2011, and the quality of Georgian cuisine — known for its lavish use of spices and aromatic herbs influenced by travelers along the Silk Road — wasn’t the problem, but the uninviting...
