You’ll soon be able to savor more of the flavors of Austin right up until the moment you board your plane to leave town. A slew of dining options will open at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport later this year and next year in the Barbara Jordan Terminal as part of the airport’s new facelift.
The renovations to the east food court near gates 7 and 8 will include the arrival of Asian-Southern fusion restaurant the Peached Tortilla, vegan grab-and-go and juice and smoothies from JuiceLand, salad spot Mad Greens, Departure Lounge, and Berry Austin Frozen Yogurt.
Changes will come to the west end of the terminal near gate 12 early next year, with the opening of Hat Creek Burger Company, Mandola’s Italian Kitchen and Flyrite Chicken. And Austin staples Hut’s Hamburgers and Tacodeli will also join the offerings next year.
Work has already begun on a location of Second Bar & Kitchen, Ivini’s Italian cafe and market, and the expansion of Salt Lick BBQ, which will see the barbecue operation double in size.
One of Austin’s best food trailers now has two locations. The breakfast sandwich specialists at Paperboy recently opened at Radio Coffee & Beer (4204 Manchaca Road). The trailer serves gooey, savory sandwiches like bacon, pimento cheese and fried egg on brioche, and a goat patty melt on sourdough. The original trailer on East 11th Street was one of the food truck all-stars in the 2016 Austin360 Dining Guide. With both Paperboy and fellow all-star Veracruz All Natural now on property, Radio has one of the strongest food truck selections in town.
Brandon and Zane Hunt, the Detroit natives responsible for Via 313 pizza, opened Nickel City, a bar at 1133 E. 11th St. in the old Longbranch Inn. The bar, which features a strong whiskey selection, cocktails, frozen riffs on classics and ample beer, features a food truck outside. Delray Cafe , named after a neighborhood in South Detroit, serves a menu of no-fuss bar fare like sliders, hot dogs and chicken wings. Delray Cafe opens at 5 p.m. daily and stays open late.
